Akon (né Alioune Badara Thiam) est un chanteur de R&B américaino-sénégalais né le 30 avril 1973 à Saint-Louis (Sénégal). Par la suite, il est parti s'installer aux États-Unis, à Jersey City, New Jersey. Akon parle anglais et wolof mais peu le français.

Akon a participé dans un des albums référence de l'histoire du rap:'the score' des fugees en tant que membre de l'aile Refugees Allstar de Wycleff Jean. Il a quitté le groupe quelque temps après et poursuit depuis une carrière individuelle. Akon compte deux albums à son compte : 'Trouble' et 'Konvicted', chacun contenant respectivement les hits "Locked Up", "Lonely", Bananza (Belly Dancer) pour son premier opus et "Smack That", "I Wanna Love You" et "Don't Matter" pour le second album.
